The Maghreb and More
March 4th, 8:00pm
Venue: Pilgrim Church Hall, Paterson St
Cost: $22 incl light supper
Join us on a journey through the dance styles and costumes of several countries across north Africa.
This informal night will start with a series of film clips and a short talk by Johara, outlining the origins of the Ghawazee. Who are they? What is their dance style and costuming?
Zahraa will then present a series of costumes, modelled by Murjanah and Johara. You'll get to see each one up close, every element and layer as you hear the rich history behind each one. Enjoy a demonstration of the basic dance moves to develop a feel for the dances. You can even join in if you wish. You're invited to ask questions at any time or even give any input of your own.
The night will end with a light supper for you to enjoy while meeting other attendees of the festival or perusing the items for sale on the stalls. Watch performances by local and interstate dancers:
Alia - Andalusian style, Ekstasis - Sword
Kylie Astarte Morrison - Turkish Kolbasti
Zahraa and Murjanah - Folkloric
